Frankincense is the first oil that I found and loved “on my own”. I have an innate love of things with a story, and am drawn to anything exotic or mysterious. Frankincense appeals to that need, for sure. It was, of course, one of the gifts of the magi, and when I use this oil, I always have a lovely image of a warm ancient desert scene, camels, starry night…
But it is extremely practical. For some reason it has been forgotten in the annals of history, but used to be pretty common up until the 18th century…so this is the one oil that may be harder to find than others, but it certainly is not too difficult, and it is not very expensive.
Top ten uses:
1. Mature skin care! This oil has been said to reverse (yes, reverse!) wrinkles. I am trying it out now on my own 41-year old skin : )
2. Bronchitis. I use this oil regularly with peppermint, lavender and eucalyptus in my children’s cough remedy.
3. Depression. I am amazed at how well it works to elevate mood.
4. Aches and Pains. It has been used for joint pain…though I have not used it in this form yet.
5. Traditionally, it is used to “drive away evil spirits” according to Tisserand in his book: The Art of Aromatherapy. This is probably why I think it works so well on our mood as a family. When I am not feeling my best, this is the scent I reach for…and…
6. It blends really well with lavender, which enhances its usefulness.
7. It actually causes the bronchii to dilate, which deepens breathing.
8. There are some studies (German) that indicate it has “mind bending” properties…I found this information in Clare Maxwell-Hudson’s “Aromatherapy Massage” and certainly, I wouldn’t doubt it!
9. Used in a diffuser, it adds a warm, sweet, clearing scent to the home.
10. It is safe to use in pregnancy and childbirth
